This is why I hate most Toyota owners.

cliffnotes: "K" claims her Toyota will never have an issue (note; she doesn't take care of it), I try to say that most Toyotas were notorious for sludge and gasket issues, she goes and shits on my advice.

Good to know that I will refuse to help her and most other cocky Toyota owners should their engine fail.

Amen. I love Toyotas (owned 5 at once last year), but they're only as good as their maintenance history.

Yep. Though I will gladly help someone if they were really stuck on an issue.

"I love _____ but they're only as good as their maintenance history"

Fill in blank with your brand of choice. Gearheads can make any brand reliable. Now difficulty of performing maintenance? Well the japanese typically beat the Euros and domestics. But ignore the maintenance on any car and enjoy the fireworks show when stuff blows up.

Hilariously, I considered asking her about it but she probably won't get it.

Christ...is this a conversation between 5 teenage girls translated from Chinese to English in Google translate? Context? Labels? Time stamps?
Nah... I'll just infer everything... annnnnd... I have come to the conclusion that I don't give a rats ass if your car was taken care of before... take care of it now and replace whatever seal is leaking.

Yep. Had a similar conversation with a friend a while back. At the time he had just bought a new Corolla to replace his old one that died. A few months later the CEL came on and he was asking me about it.

me: keep in mind that you cannot pass MA state inspection if the CEL is on

some autozones will also clear it because it could potentially be nothing

and then if it comes back you can check it again

him: I already passed inspection when i got it a few months ago

me: you got a new car?

him: [insert license plate here]

me: ....

i knew you had a corolla before

did you get a new one?

him: yeah

me: ah

him: old one broke down

me: details?

him: kinda

me: 2010?

him: 2010 corolla, white

me: trim?

him: pretty much the same thing, just newer

me: LE?

SE?

S

him: LOL its a car man

me: ....

him: normal

se maybe

i dunno

get's me from A to B

me: _

him: I can tell exactly the look you're giving me right now too

me: fine, i can suppose all you need is a car that gets you from point A to point B... and gets wood and tools back from home depot to point A..... but how do you not know what you bought?

i know jack shit about washing machines or TVs, but if i go out and spend a substantial amount on one... i'll at least know the model i just bought

him: 2010 toyota corolla

white

license plate #######

me: yeah

carfax isnt much help

2010 TOYOTA COROLLA/S/LE/XLE

thanks

thats only all the trims

if you don't mind, can i ask how much you paid for it?

him: I dont care about trim?

13,400ish, I think

but I sold the old one for 4,500ish

Now I understand not everyone is a car person. He for instance is hugely into woodworking and carpentry while I'm not. He probably can list of lathe and drill press specs like I can list off car specs. But to not know what you just spent $13k of your hard earned money on is beyond me. Furthermore, spending $13k on an exact copy of your previous "ultra reliable" car that died early (68k miles) is even worse.

What is this clusterfuck of a forum/chat you were in?

And yes, while they may be pretty reliable from the factory, the cars can only live up to that if their owners let them.

I only bought my Honda because it was a one owner car with low miles, and a perfect service history. Buying used is always a bit of a crapshoot, but this seems to have tipped the scales into my favour. Had it been neglected, I might have gone down the crazy route as well. A used and abused Maserati from the early 90s that has been sitting in the back of a low-end dealer lot for some time can be had for ToyoHondSsan money right now.

Kinja'd!!!

An abused car is an abused car, no matter the make. The only difference may be the cost of spare parts.

Toyota owners suck, BMW owners are pricks, Mustang owners are rednecks, Honda owners are ricers, Supercar owners don't talk to you because you might get your poverty grease all over their $1000 suit...

IS THERE ANY CAR SUBCULTURE WORTH BELONGING TOO!?

Kinja'd!!!

Oh. Right. :)

I took a pre-ASVAB test in a USMC recruiters once. There was a bunch of ROTC kids in there slapping together their new office furniture and when I pulled a 98th percentile on it without trying they all looked at me in aw... then one said... in the most drawn out deliverance twang I have ever heard in my life... "Ya must be reallllly smaaarrrt"
Fortunately it doesn't take much mental acuity to peal potatoes and mop floors in the armed services... as in life the smart ones make it further.

Did you ask when he got his last oil change, and he replied something along the lines of his reply for the trim?

He got his oil changed when he bought it at a Toyota dealer. And they gave him 2 years free oil changes. He said his next one would be when his odo hit the numbers on the windshield corner sticker.

He's fairly handy so I convinced him to change his own oil once on his old Corolla. He got really angry with me after he bought the oil and filter, but found out he would need a special oil filter wrench and something to drain the oil into. Complained that it cost him more than it would have at the dealer.
